A late-night door-kicking prank in Deltona, Florida, ended with a woman’s small dog dead and a 14-year-old boy under arrest, according to authorities. Deputies say the prank, linked to a viral social media challenge, set off a sequence of events that no one involved appeared to anticipate.

The incident happened on December 20, 2025, when a group of teens allegedly ran up to a home and kicked the front door before running away. Investigators say the force and surprise caused the homeowner’s Yorkshire terrier Spookie to bolt outside, where the dog was later struck by a passing car.

The dog did not survive, and the prank quickly escalated from a moment of mischief into a criminal investigation with lasting consequences.

What Authorities Say Happened

According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, the teens were participating in a door-kicking prank circulating online, sometimes described as a “challenge.” Deputies say one of the teens kicked the door hard enough to cause damage, prompting the homeowner to open it.

When the door opened, the woman’s dog, a Yorkshire terrier named Spookie, ran out into the street. Authorities say the dog was hit by a vehicle shortly afterward and died from its injuries.

The sheriff’s office said investigators initially struggled to identify those involved. Over time, tips, video evidence, and follow-up work led deputies to a 14-year-old suspect, who was arrested at his school weeks later.

Charges Filed Against the 14-Year-Old

The teen now faces multiple charges, including burglary and criminal mischief, according to law enforcement. Because of his age, authorities have not released his name.

Sheriff’s officials emphasized that the arrest was based on the alleged act of kicking the door, not on intentionally harming the dog. Even so, deputies said the law allows for serious charges when property is forcibly entered and damage occurs, regardless of whether the harm was intended.

For Dissany Cid, Spookie’s owner, the loss has been devastating. She has spoken publicly about the emotional toll of losing her dog in such a sudden and senseless way.

Cid said Spookie was more than a pet, describing the dog as a constant companion and a source of comfort in her daily life. Seeing the incident reduced to a “prank,” she said, has made the grief even harder to process.

She has also described feeling discouraged early in the investigation, believing at one point that the case might never be solved. The eventual arrest brought a sense of acknowledgment, but not closure for the loss she continues to mourn.

Law enforcement officials say the case is a sobering example of how online trends can spill into real-world harm. Pranks that may appear harmless on social media can become dangerous when they involve strangers, property damage, or sudden confrontations.
